The National League Central race for first place is heating up between the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The two teams meet this weekend in Cincinnati for an important three game series, with the first game tonight. The Reds are leading the Pirates in the division by three games and could extend that lead to as much as six games if they sweep the series. The Pirates on the other hand, could leave Cincinnati tied if they can sweep the weekend series.

On the season, the Reds have a record of 64-41 while the Pirates record is 60-44. Both teams have played very well thus far in the season and with less than 60 games remaining both have an opportunity to make the postseason. Not since 1990, have the teams played in the postseason in the same year. That year the Big Red Machine, went on to win their last World Series title.

Since July 16, Cincinnati has won 14 of 17 games and has done so without their most valuable player Joey Votto who has been on the disabled list. For the past two games, the Reds have also been without Brandon Phillips who has a calf strain. He is day to day. Tonight Cincinnati sends Mat Latos against the Pirates. Latos has a season record of 9-3 with a 4.17 ERA. He has faced the Pirates once this season and won 5-0 and for his career, he is 3-0 with a 2.16 ERA against Pittsburgh.

Wandy Rodriguez will pitch tonight for the Pirates. Rodriguez has a season record of 7-9 with an ERA of 3.82. He played previously with the Reds and faced his old team last Saturday for the first time. He did not factor in the decision of the game, but had a season high in walks with five.

The line currently has Cincinnati favored on their home field at -152 to the Pirates’ +142. The total is sitting at 8. Smart money is behind the Reds and Latos to win tonight, with the OVER making winners of the total bettors.
