Dallas Cowboys 2012 Preview

The opening kickoff for the Dallas Cowboys regular season is just weeks away. The team for 2012, as is usually the case has high expectations and lots of talent. The question is will that amount to wins and a trip to the post season. The pressure is on both coaches and players already, as they tasted disappointing at the end of last season and owner Jerry Jones is not a forgiving sort of owner.

Of late, the Cowboys have been underachievers therefore many are saying instead of this being their year it might be their year. Jones told the press that the window of opportunity for his team was closing. He needs his star players like quarterback Tony Romo to step up. Also important on the offense this season will be receivers Miles Austin and second year Dez Bryant, as long as he can keep his off the field problems, off the field. Anchoring the backfield is DeMarco Murray and young offensive lineman Phil Costa and Tyron Smith will help make the line stronger.

Two linebackers declining with age Keith Brooking and Bradie James have replacements in Dan Connor and Bruce Carter two players in their mid twenties. Star Sean Lee will anchor the two young backers. First round draftee Morris Claiborne will have to start quickly at corner and will be helped by Brandon Carr a huge pick up in the free agent market. DeMarcus Ware will be back as the league’s top pass rusher.

Jones was probably referring more to Coach Jason Garrett when he said the window of opportunity was closing. Another 8-8 season might mean goodbye for the former reserve QB. The bottom line is as usual the team has talent. Defensively the cornerback position is much improved. The question is can Garrett finally be the Parcells’ type coach Jones wants or will he continue to be a Wade Phillips’ protégé. If the teams can pass well and defend well against the pass, the Cowboys could reach the NFC Championship or even the Super Bowl.
