Angels vs Rangers Free Pick July 30 2012

The American League West divisional race could become much tighter after this week’s four game series between the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels. The Rangers currently lead the Oakland Athletics by 4 ½ games and the Angels by five. The Angels visit the Rangers to start the four game set tonight. The Angels lost two consecutive games over the weekend and were shutout in both games. Texas was able to win on Sunday to avoid being swept by the Chicago White Sox.

The Angels must perform well in this series if they hope to battle in late September for the division title. If they can win at least three of the four games, then they can cut into Texas’ lead and gain confidence for the remainder of the year. On the other hand, if Texas can take three of the four games, then they can open an 8 or 9 game spread over California and worry only about the Athletics.

The Rangers will send Roy Oswalt to pitch against the Angels tonight. Oswalt is 3-1 on the season and has a 5.22 ERA. He missed a start in the rotation due to a back ailment but is ready to go against the Angels. This will be his first career start against Los Angeles, as he was just recently acquired by the Angels from the National League. Over his past two starts, Oswalt has only allowed one earned run in both games.

The Angels will start the series tonight with Ervin Santana on the mound. Santana has a season record of 4-10 and a 6.00 ERA. The right hander is fighting to keep a spot in the Angels’ pitching rotation, as he has not pitched well of late. His last start was nine days ago against the Rangers and he allowed the Rangers to score six runs behind three home runs in a 9-2 loss. In his past five appearances, Santana is 0-3 with a 9.41 ERA.

The line has the Rangers as the favorite at -145, with the Angles sitting at +135. The total is 10. Take Texas to win and the total to pay out to those betting on the UNDER.
