Mets Game Preview: Young Replaces Gee as Starting Pitcher Friday July 13, 2012

by Wagerweb

Chris Young and Mets look for upset at Atlanta

When the New York Mets open the second half of the baseball season on Friday, it will be veteran right-hander Chris Young on the mound instead of scheduled starter Dillon Gee, who has landed on the disabled list.

Gee was hospitalized Tuesday with numbness in the fingers of his right hand, and a subsequent angiogram revealed a clot in a right shoulder artery. The Mets plan to place Gee on the disabled list before resuming play Friday. Gee reportedly does not have an aneurysm, but doctors are still working to determine the extent of any damage caused by the clot.

Gee, 26, is 6-7 with a 4.10 ERA in 17 starts, and he was scheduled to open the team’s second half Friday in Atlanta. He has been a mainstay in the rotation for the Mets (46-40), who were a bit of a surprise in the season’s first half. They are in third place in the NL East, 4½ games behind the division-leading Washington Nationals. Gee had one of his best outings of the season Saturday, giving up one run in eight innings in a 3-1 victory against the Chicago Cubs. But after complaining of numbness in his fingers Sunday, he was sent for tests that determined he had a clot

Now the Mets will shuffle their rotation. Manager Terry Collins said the revised rotation now has Young starting Friday in Atlanta, followed by R.A. Dickey on Saturday. Jonathon Niese or Johan Santana will start Sunday. Miguel Batista will join the rotation temporarily as Gee’s replacement. Santana originally was scripted for the second-half opener, but a twisted right ankle scrapped those plans. Young is 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA this season. He hasn’t faced the Braves.

If Gee misses an extended period of time, the Mets will consider calling up top prospect Matt Harvey, who is 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA, 28 strikeouts and seven walks over his last four starts for Triple-A Buffalo.

Free Pick: Young will pitch well and we see the Mets sqeaking out the upset here. Mets +140
