Rays vs Red Sox Free Pick May 25, 2012

May 25, 2012

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays visit the confines of Fenway Park for a three game Memorial Day weekend set against the Boston Red Sox. Tampa has a 27-18 record on the season, while Boston has come back after a shaky start to even their record at 22-22. The Red Sox have won four of six games thus far this season against the Rays and the Red Sox will look for a good weekend series to try to get out of last place in the AL East.

The Red Sox will have ace Jon Lester throwing tonight. Lester is 3-3 on the season with an ERA of 3.95. He will be attempting to go 3-0 over his last three starts tonight. However, Lester is 0-2 in his last two starts against Tampa and is 10-6 lifetime against the Rays. At home, Lester is only 6-5 lifetime against Tampa.

Opposing Lester on the mound tonight will be Alex Cobb. Cobb is a native of Boston and is 1-0 on the season with an ERA of 2.57. This will be his first game in the major leagues in Boston. He took over a spot in the Rays’ rotation for Jeff Niemann who was injured. Cobb gave up just two runs in seven innings in his debut last week against Atlanta. In seven innings, he struck out six Atlanta batters.

In the four wins over Tampa this season, the Red Sox have outscored the Rays by 22 runs. David Ortiz has batted .455 with eight runs batted in against the Rays this year. Tampa recently lost four out of five games, but has rebounded with two consecutive wins. In those wins, they have scored 13 runs, while in the previous six games they only scored 15.

The current line has the Red Sox as the favorite -170, while Tampa is at +160. The run total is at 9. The Red Sox will start this series with a win behind the pitching of Lester. Take Boston to win, with the total paying out to the OVER.
