Cardinals vs Dodgers Free Pick May 20, 2012

May 20, 2012

The Los Angeles Dodgers, the team with the best record in the majors at 27-13, host the St. Louis Cardinals in the third game of their weekend series. The Dodgers have won both games in the series and even though they are known for their bats, it has been excellent pitching that has carried them of late.

Chad Billingsley will look to carry on with fine pitching in tonight’s game against the Cardinals, who are 22-18 on the season. Billingsley is 2-3 on the season with an ERA of 3.83, but has gone 0-3 with an ERA of 5.34 over his last six times on the mound.

He will face Kyle Lohse. Lohse has pitched terrific for the Cardinals this season. Lohse is 5-1 on the season and has an ERA of 2.70. Seven of the eight starts Lohse has made this season have resulted in the Cardinals winning. He has pitched five times on the road this season and is 4-1 with an ERA of 2.08 in this five starts.

The Dodgers have the league’s best hitter in Matt Kemp, but he is currently on the disabled list. Kemp, before straining his hamstring was hitting .359 with 12 home runs and 28 RBIs. The Dodgers have now won six consecutive over the Cardinals and that is the longest streak since they won eight straight between 1975 and 1976.

The Cardinals offense took a hit during Saturday’s loss, as Lance Berkman injured his knee when receiving a throw at first base. He was last season’s comeback player of the year, but has been injured much of this season. His status is a game time decision.

Even though the Dodgers are holders of the majors’ best record, the Cardinals are favored -135 in this game with the Dodgers at +115. The run total is sitting at 6.5. The Dodgers will sweep this series behind the pitching of Billingsley and the clutch hitting of Andre Ethier. Take the Dodgers to win with the run total ending UNDER.
