Orioles vs Nationals Free Pick May 18, 2012

Interleague play starts this weekend in major league baseball. One excellent matchup will pit two of the best teams in each league. The Baltimore Orioles visit the Washington Nationals for the first of three games at Nationals Park.

When the teams met in previous years, the games were not as meaningful as this series will be, since it pits two of the best teams in the majors. The Orioles are leading the American League east thanks to great numbers in the power department. The Orioles have 61 home runs to lead the majors. Washington is no slouch, as they lead the majors in team ERA with an impressive 2.94. Currently the Nationals are just a ½ game behind Atlanta in their division.

The teams split their six meetings last season, with each winning two of three at home. Edwin Jackson will start for the Nationals. Jackson is 1-1 on the season with an ERA of 3.71. Jackson is only 0-1 in his last five appearances, yielding five hits and three runs on Sunday in a no-decision for him against Cincinnati. Against the Orioles lifetime, Jackson is 5-0 with an ERA of just 2.68.

Opposing Jackson on the mound will be the Orioles’ Jake Arrieta. Arrieta is 2-4 on the season with an ERA of 5.21. He is 1-4 in his last five starts. Arrieta had an exceptional game on May 2 when he defeated the New York Yankees, but since then he has an ERA of 9.90.

The Orioles are 7-0 in their last seven games on the road. Baltimore won their finale against Kansas City on Thursday. The Nationals are favored in the game at -120 with the Orioles at +100. The run total is sitting at 7.5. The Orioles are playing exceptionally well on the road and have a power game where they do not need many runs to win. Take the Orioles in this game, with the total paying out to the UNDER bettor.
