Celtics vs Hawks Free Pick April 29, 2012

The Boston Celtics have once again made their way to the NBA playoffs. The veteran Celtics made a big push late in the season to take the Atlantic Division title and fourth place in the Eastern Conference. On April 29, they open their first round series against the Atlanta Hawks, in Atlanta.

Even though the Celtics won their division, the Hawks had a better overall record by one game and thus hold home court advantage. That advantage could be key. In 2008, when the two teams met in the playoffs the series went to seven games with each team winning all their games on their home court. The Celtics won the series in seven games and eventually went on to win the NBA title that same year.

Boston ended the season 39-27 and was 15-18 on the road. The Celtics won their last two games and 7 of their last 10 in the regular season. Boston relies on three veterans to carry the team Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. Their leader in assists Rajon Rondo has been nursing a bad back, but should be ready to play.

Atlanta ended their season 40-26 and at home was 23-10. The Hawks won their last two games and finished the season 7-3 SU. The Hawks are lead by a committee of players including veteran Joe Johnson and forward Josh Smith. Jeff Teague leads the team in assists and steals.

The Hawks lead the head to head matchups between the two teams 6-4 SU and ATS over the last 10 games. This season the team met on three occasions. Boston was 2-1 SU and ATS in those three games. The total was UNDER twice and OVER once in those same three games.

The current line has the Hawks as just a 1 ½-point favorite playing on their home court. The total is sitting at 178 ½. This series will be highlighted by tough defense with points coming at a premium. The Celtics defense is one of the league’s best. Look for the Celtics to steal the first game of the series. Take Boston plus the points with the total ending UNDER.
