Nationals vs Dodgers Free Pick April 27, 2012

April 27, 2012

The MLB season is still young, but two teams have impressed sportswriters and baseball aficionados with their impressive starts to the season. The Washington Nationals lead the National League with a 14-5 record and are the most surprising team in the league. They visit the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday to start a three game weekend series.

The pitching staff for Washington has been carrying the load for the club. As of Thursday, the team ERA was 2.20, the best in the league. However, they lost a tough game in San Diego Thursday by the score of just 2-1. Prior to that loss, the Nationals had won four straight.

Ross Detwiler will get the nod tonight for the Nationals. Detwiler is 2-0 on the season. He has 15 strikeouts in 16 innings of work. He fanned seven over six innings last Friday in a 2-0 win against the Marlins.

The Dodgers have opened their season with a 13-6 record, but have lost two straight games. They have Clayton Kershaw throwing in tonight’s game. Kershaw was a winner of 21 games last season. This season he is currently 1-0 with an ERA of just 1.61. The southpaw will look to silence the Nationals’ bats.

The Dodgers offensively rely on the power of Andre Ethier and teammate Matt Kemp. Between the two thus far in the season, they have belted 14 home runs along with knocking in 45 runs in only the first 19 games. Kemp is on fire. He leads the league in batting, home runs and RBIs.

The Nationals hitting is not nearly as potent as their pitching. They rely on ex-Dodger Jayson Werth who is hitting .290 on the season. Power hitter Ryan Zimmerman is still out of the line up and that tends to leave Werth exposed and teams like to pitch around him if possible.

The line has the Dodgers favored with the total at 6. Kershaw will shut the Washington offense down and Kemp and Ethier will find a way to provide the Dodgers offense. Take the Dodgers in a game that will end UNDER.
