Mets vs Rockies Free Pick April 27, 2012

The Colorado Rockies host the New York Mets tonight in the first of three games at Coors Field. Both teams feel they could be playing better baseball than they have and the Mets look as though they may be coming around. New York is 11-8 thus far early in the season and just finished sweeping the Marlins in three games. Nevertheless, they had the wind taken out of their sails Thursday when they learned that starter Mike Pelfrey would probably need Tommy John surgery on the tear in his elbow.

Against Miami, the Mets had a team ERA of just 1.33. In tonight’s matchup, the Mets will call on Chris Schwinden, who was called up from Buffalo in Triple-A to fill in for the loss of Pelfrey. In five starts for Buffalo this season, Schwinden was 2-2 with a 2.05 ERA. He has pitched in the majors before. Last season he appeared in four games for the Mets and was 0-2 with a 4.71 ERA.

Colorado is off to a mediocre 9-9 start to the season. They have lost 3 of their last 5, including a 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in their last outing Wednesday. Offensively the Rockies bats are asleep. The team has a collective team batting average of just .200 over their last five games played. In their three game series against the Pirates, in which they dropped two of the three, the team hit just .167.

The Rockies will call upon Drew Pomeranz to open the series with the Mets. Pomeranz has a record of 0-1 for the season. The southpaw had a good outing on Saturday. He allowed just two hits and two runs over the first five innings in a win against Milwaukee.

The Mets’ bats are lead by Chris Nieuwenhuis and teammate Josh Thole. Nieuwenhuis has at least one hit in 11 of his past 13 games. Over that stretch of games, he is hitting .354. Thole is tied for the team lead in batting with an average of.362.

The current line has Colorado favored at home. The total is at 9.5. With an inexperienced pitcher on the mound for New York, the Rockies will look to shake him up early. Take the Rockies in this game with the total OVER.
