Nationals vs Padres Free Pick April 26, 2012

The Washington Nationals have started off the season on fire and much of that is due to excellent pitching. Tonight the Nationals will take on the San Diego Padres in the third game of a three game series. The Nationals have won the first two games of the series and will be looking to win their fifth straight overall at Petco Park. The Nationals, behind the pitching of Jordan Zimmerman won Wednesday night’s game and set a record for the franchise with 26 consecutive scoreless innings from its starters.

Washington is currently in first place in the NL East and has won six series to open the season. Edwin Jackson will get the ball for the Nationals tonight. Jackson is 1-1 on the season with an ERA of 4.26. He had a complete game win against Cincinnati where he only gave up two runs, but gave up five runs in the first inning in an 11-4 loss to the Houston Astros in his last outing.

Edinson Volquez will get the start for the Padres. He is 0-2 with an ERA of 4.30 on the season. He will be going for the fifth time this season trying for his first win in a Padre uniform. He had a two-hit shutout through seven innings against Philadelphia but lost 4-1 and has been plagued by walks. He has given up 15 in just 23 innings. His career numbers against the Nationals are 1-1 with an ERA of 9.72 in just two starts.

Adam LaRoche has been hitting well for the Nationals and had three hits in their win Wednesday night. Over his last five games against the Padres, LaRoche has hit .350. The Padres have the worst record in the NL at 5-14. Their team batting average is a paltry .211.
