Brewers versus Cubs April 12, 2012

April 12, 2012

The MLB season is barely a week old and the Chicago Cubs are already struggling. Today the Cubs will take on the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are mired in last place in the NL Central with a record of just 1-5. The Cubs hope to avoid being swept after losing on Wednesday 2-1 to Milwaukee. The Brewers are 4-2 on the season and in second place, just a half game behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the divisional race.

Today’s game will matchup two right-handers that are two of the league’s strongest. Zack Greinke will face off against Matt Garza. Greinke was nearly unhittable in his last start on Saturday against the Cardinals. He threw seven scoreless innings in a shutout win 6-0. Last season, Greinke started three games against Chicago. The Brewers won two of the three games with the only loss at Wrigley where the Cubbies soundly defeated the Brewers 12-7.

Garza pitched well in his lone start thus far in the young season, but the bullpen for Chicago blew a two-run lead and the Cubs eventually lost 7-4. Garza, formerly with Tampa Bay, allowed five hits and just two earned runs over six innings. It was the first loss Chicago has suffered in a Garza start since last year on August 25. In 2011, Garza was 3-0 in his first three starts against Milwaukee. In September, he tossed a six-hit complete game against the Brewers.

Milwaukee has won three straight, while Chicago has dropped three in a row. The Brewers are favored -120, while the Cubs line is +110. The oddsmakers in this contest still have not released the run total. The Cubs will look to turn around their lackluster start and get to Grienke early and often. Look for the Cubs bats to wake up and be helped by a strong second outing from Garza.
