Syracuse vs. Wisconsin Free Picks

Syracuse No. 1 (33-2) vs. Wisconsin No. 4 (26-9) Thursday March 22

Orangemen -4

Syracuse opened their tournament with a scare, as they nearly lost to 16th seeded UNC Asheville. A few controversial calls went their way near the end to help prevent them from being the first number one seed to fall to a 16th seeded team. Nevertheless, in their second game they returned to play as the Orange fans are accustomed to. They handily defeated the Wildcats of Kansas State 75-59. The Orange is without Fab Melo, their sophomore center who has been ruled academically ineligible for the tournament. In his place, they will play Rakeem Christmas, a 6-9 freshmen and Baye Keita a sophomore who stands 6-10.

This is the third Sweet 16 for Wisconsin in the last five years. It is also their fifth trip to the final 16 under Bo Ryan, their head coach. The Badgers must play better perimeter basketball on the offensive end if they expect to get to the Elite 8.

Vanderbilt decided to switch to a zone defense late in the Badgers’ 60-57 second round win. The Badgers looked very tentative and heaved shots from the outside that often times missed their mark. Wisconsin ended the game shooting just 10 for 33 from three-point range. They will not be able to afford to do that against a team with the offense power of Syracuse. They cannot just settle for 3s. They will need a more balanced attack if they expect to upset Syracuse.

The play of Jordan Taylor, their point guard will determine how the game is played out. If Taylor can penetrate Syracuses zone and make short jumpers or kick the ball out to open players, then the Badgers may have a chance.

The current line has the Orange as 4-point favorites after opening at 3. The total is sitting at 121.

Pick: Syracuse (-4) Total: OVER
