Michigan State vs. Louisville Free Picks

March 20, 2012

Michigan State No. 1 (29-7) vs. Louisville No. 4 (28-9) Thursday March 22

MSU -5

This matchup is as much about the two coaches and their respective talents, as it is about the 10 players on the court. Rick Pitino the coach of the Louisville Cardinals and Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo are two of the best in the business. Both have won the NCAA national championship.

Louisville qualified for the Sweet 16 by beating the New Mexico Lobos. The Cardinals defeated the Lobos 59-56 to cover the 2-point favorite spread. Michigan State arrived on the Sweet 16 when they defeated Saint Louis in the second round of the tournament 65-61. However, they did not cover the 7-point spread they were given as the favorite.

Overall Louisville is 28-9 SU and 20-12-1 ATS. Michigan State is 29-7 SU and 23-11 ATS. Head to head the two teams last met in 2009. The Spartans won that game 64-52. The total was 135 and ended UNDER as only 116 points were scored in the game.

Michigan State is led by 6-7 forward Draymond Green. In the first two games of the tournament this year, he has scored 40 points, grabbed 25 boards, and dished out 16 assists. In their first game in the tournament he had a triple double with 24 points, 12 boards and 10 dishes.

Michigan is huge up front and that will work to their favor. Their frontcourt consists of the 6-7 Green, 6-9 Derrick Nix and the 6-10 Adreian Payne. Louisville does not have anyone with that size. Peyton Siva, the point guard for the Cardinals helped led the team to their Big East tournament championship is playing the best of any point guard in the tournament. He will need to play as good or better if the Cardinals hope to score against one of the countries toughest defenses.

The current line on this matchup has the Spartans as 5-point favorites. The current line is sitting at 125. Michigan State’s front line will wear down the Louisville defense and the game will go to the Spartans.
