Free Hoops Pick: UNC vs. Duke

Duke vs. North Carolina Rivalry

It does not get much better than this. The Duke Blue Devils will travel to Dean Smith Center to take on theNorth Carolina Tar Heels February 8. The Blue Devils have a record of 19-4, while North Carolina is sitting at 20-3. North Carolina is currently tied for the Atlantic Coast Conference lead with a 7-1 record while Duke is just one game behind in third with a 6-2 conference record.

Harrison Barnes who is averaging 17.3 points and 4.8 assists per game leads the Tar Heels. Tyler Zeller is scoring at a rate of 15.2 points per game and hauling down 9.6 rebounds per game. John Henson helps on the boards as well averaging 10 rebounds per game. Kendall Marshall leads the team in assists with 9.8 per game.

Duke has four players averaging double figures in scoring. Austin Rivers leads the team with a 14.5 per game average, while both Seth Curry and Ryan Kelly are averaging 12.6 points per game. Mason Plumlee controls the boards for Duke with a 9.7 per game average.

Head to head is the most important stat when these two teams face off. Duke has won 10 of its last 15 games SU against North Carolina when playing on the road. Duke is also 4-1 SU in their last five games against North Carolina. Head to head North Carolina is 5-5 SU in its last ten games against Duke and 5-5 ATS in its last ten games against Duke.

Records against other opponents, records against conference rivals and every other stat can be pushed aside when these two rivals face off. Few rivalries match this. Nonetheless, Duke is 3-2 SU over its last five games and lost an overtime thriller at home to Miami Sunday night. North Carolina, on the other hand, is 5-0 SU in it last five games and comes in playing topflight ball. However when it comes to these two teams and the special rivarly we like to take the team getting points no matter what. Take Duke plus the points.
