Pac-12 Championship Game: UCLA (6-6) at Oregon (10-2)

December 02, 2011

The first-ever Pac-12 Championship Game looks like no game at all as No. 9 Oregon is expected to spank UCLA in the final game for Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel. The Ducks are 31-point college football bets favorites for Friday night’s game at Autzen Stadium.

The winner here will play the Wisconsin-Michigan State winner in the Rose Bowl. If UCLA somehow pulls the upset, it would have major BCS implications because it would bump a much more deserving team from a big bowl. If the Bruins lose, they are expected to petition the NCAA for a waiver to play in a bowl with their 6-7 record.

And it’s hard to see UCLA winning this game after getting destroyed 50-0 last week by UCLA – that was the final straw in firing Neuheisel, who wouldn’t coach UCLA if it does reach a bowl. The Trojans, who won at Oregon 38-35 on Nov. 19, have the best record in the Pac-12 South Division but are banned from postseason play for another year. So that’s why UCLA is here.

Offensively, UCLA, which runs the pistol, ranks third in the conference in rushing (193.2 yards per game), but 10th in scoring (23.2 points per game). The Bruins are tied for seventh with Oregon State in scoring defense (30.8 points) and eighth in total defense (411.9 yards).

Oregon clinched the new North Division with a 49-21 victory over the Beavers in the 115th Civil War. The Ducks are going after their third straight outright conference championship. USC (2004-06) is the only Pac-12 school to accomplish that feat since the conference expanded to 10 teams in 1978, but later had its ‘04 and ‘05 titles vacated.

Ducks junior RB LaMichael James, likely playing the final home game of his career, is the leading rusher in the FBS, averaging 142.70 yards per game. James also leads the country in runs of 30-plus (11) and 40-plus (7) yards. Oregon’s 551 points are the second-most in team history behind 611 in 2010. Of Oregon’s 68 offensive drives resulting in touchdowns, 38 have taken two minutes or less and 12 have lasted 60 seconds or less. UO’s longest drive of the season, in terms of yards, lasted 37 seconds as the Ducks drove 93 yards in three plays on consecutive pass completions of 46, 40 and 7 yards against Missouri State.

The Bruins lead the series 39-25, but have lost the last three games played. UCLA owns a 17-12 advantage in games played in Eugene, but has dropped the last three. The Bruins last won, in Eugene, by a 34-26 score in the 2004 season. Last season’s 47-point victory margin (60-13) by UO was the largest by either team in series history. Since Chip Kelly’s arrival in 2007, the Ducks are 29-4 at Autzen, averaging 45.8 points per home game. by Wagerweb

Sportsbook Advisor Take:  Oregon should beat this team pretty good but we are guessing for a backdoor cover. Maybe Oregon wins by 27. Anyway, 30+ points is a totally crazy amount and we are taking the points for small action.
