Wednesday NCAA basketball: Virginia Tech vs. No. 5 Syracuse

November 23, 2011

It’s the first test of the season for No. 5 Syracuse, a favorite in the Big East, as the Orange face a Virginia Tech squad that soon will be its conference rival again – but in the ACC. Bet on this NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden .

Since beating No. 22 Virginia in December 1995, the Hokies (3-0) have lost 12 consecutive games to ranked, non-conference opponents. Their last top-10, non-league conquest was No. 7 North Carolina State 28 years ago.

“We need to find out about ourselves,” guard Dorenzo Hudson said. “We’re trying to build an elite team here, so we need to step up the competition.”

Hudson was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week for last week. The senior averaged 24.5 points and 2.5 assists in wins over Monmouth and FIU. In Tuesday’s 78-63 win over FIU, he was eight-of-13 from the floor and a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line en route to scoring an ACC season-high 31 points in a victory that advanced the Hokies to the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off. Hudson is third in the ACC in scoring, at 19.3 points per game.

The Orange (4-0), who may have their deepest team in years under Coach Jim Boeheim, haven’t won a game by less than 24 points yet. Last time out, SU crushed Colgate 92-47 in its first game since long-time assistant coach Bernie Fine was placed on administrative leave after being accused of molesting two former SU ball boys. Fine’s usual seat by Boeheim was left vacant. This is Fine’s 36th season working for the head coach. Dion Waiters scored 16 points, James Southerland had 14 and C.J. Fair 13 for the Orange.

Led by forward Kris Joseph and guard Brandon Triche, the Orange return four starters from a 27-8 team that reached the round of 32 in last season’s NCAA tournament.

This will be the sixth meeting between the Hokies and Orange. SU leads the all-time series, 3-2 and has won the last three meetings in the series, all three in Syracuse. Tech and SU have never met on a neutral court. Since Seth Greenberg took over as the Hokies’ head coach in 2003, Tech has played seven games in “The World’s Most Famous Arena” and has a 6-1 record in those games.

The line has opened at Syracuse -7. We feel that this spread gives a slight value to Syracuse at home -7.
